FBAs and BIPs
I'm sorry, but if I had to name three letters that make me want to scream, they would be F, B, and A. In 15 years I've been to no fewer than five FBA trainings, each one completely different from the one before.
Since I have a fundamental philosophical objection to the traditional FBA that allows me only two choices for "functions" (escape or avoidance of work, or gaining attention), I try to write FBAs that are based on the tenets of Collaborative Problem Solving.
While I was essentially winging it for awhile, Dr. Larry Epstein at Think:Kids has developed this FBA form. It looks fairly traditional but still has room for considering lagging skills and triggers. He says to check back periodically, as it is always a work in progress.
Below is an FBA in which I tried to strike a balance between the purely behavioral report I had been told to write, and the CPS-based one that I feel is much more helpful. This was a particularly challenging case, because there were several outside consultants/behavior specialists involved and I had to try not to step on any toes or get myself in trouble for insubordination. I think I did okay. Of course, all the identifying data has been changed.
